A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
