PSG Overcomes Marseille on Penalties to Claim French Super Cup in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now claimed the season-opening trophy on fourteen different times.

The Parisian giants required a dramatic equaliser followed by a successful spot-kick decider to get past their arch-rivals in Kuwait and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the match between the French league champions and the Coupe de France holders after Ousmane Dembele found the scoring early on.

Yet, Marseille fired two times late to take a shock lead. First, the English forward converted from the penalty spot, before the defender inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking turn of events, the Portuguese striker snatched a crucial leveler in the dying moments to send the contest into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, stopping decisive attempts from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and Desire Doue all scored with composure for PSG to seal a convincing penalty win.

Now 14-time winners Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after completing a domestic double, have now lifted this competition for the twelfth time in the last thirteen seasons.
