In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
